Whanganui River (Fluss Kayak) Tour

 🚘Tag 1 / Day 1 ⛺🚣 Tag 2 / Day 2 ⛺🚣 Tag 3 / Day 3 ⛺🚣🏠

Mittwoch, 25. Feb 2026 (Wednesday)

           A longer drive by car with almost 5 hours from Auckland to Whanganui.

💩

Destination: Raetihi Holiday Park where we met all 17 of us. The others in my group stayed in bunk beds in shared dorms. This time, I decided to take my little hiking tent. I hope we have good weather; otherwise, I have the black joker... a wet bum is not so much fun!

A nice and very clean holiday park. After arrival we had a safety briefing how to safely navigate the river with its rapids, where we were made aware of any hazards and some useful tips what to do and best prepare for when in the canoe or in my case on the kayak.

🍝

Afterwards we all were hungry and the kitchen was fully occupied by us. I was surprised to see what others brought along - even a full pot of Indian food with rice, while I had my ready pouch with pasta cabonara. Can't go wrong with it, its easy and simple, tasty too.

Ich bin erstaunt was andere alles anschleppen :)
I am quite surprised what others all bring along

Hier passt es doch gut um mein Zelt aufzustellen - A good spot to put my tent up

One night in the tent and tomorrow we're off!

😴

🚣Und dann war es so weit!

~~~🚣And then, let the trip begin!
Donnerstag, 26. Feb 2026 (Thursday)
Dann ging es 1 Std 40 min mit dem Bus von Raetihi zu der Flussmündung. Da hatte ich noch gut lachen... nach etwa ner halben Stunde war mir Bus-schlecht/seekrank und ich hatte den meisten Teil der Fahrt damit zu tun, mich nicht zu übergeben...
👽💣
Then finally, we are all on the bus to the river and the beginning of our journey. Here, I still had a smile, but that changed about 30 minutes into the bus ride when I got motion sick... the rest of the drive I struggled with not throwing up.
Der Busfahrer händigte uns einen Wetterbericht aus - sieht ja (noch) sehr vielversprechend aus!
The bus driver handed us the most recent weather forecast - looks promising (so far)
Endlich angekommen und erstmal alles abladen, ausladen, Kanus und Kayak an der Wasserkante platzieren, dann die Fässer in die Boote einlagern und festzurren.
Wir waren eine ungrade Zahl an Personen, ein Kanu wird von 2 Paddlern besessen und alle hatten sich bereits mit einer anderen Person zusammengetan, eine nicht, das war dann wohl ich die für das einzelne Kayak übrig blieb. Was mir aber ganz recht war. Dann gab es eine kurze Sicherheitseinweisung zur Wassersicherheit in den Booten und wie man am besten durch die Stromschnellen kommt. Wir erhielten einen Ortungssender für den Notfall und dann ging der Spaß los.
Finally we arrived and had to unload the canoes and the kayak. placed them at the water edge and the barrels with our belongings had to be loaded into the boats, make sure its all securely fastened.
We were an uneven number of people and one had to take the single sit on kayak - in this case it was me as everyone else had already teamed up with another person. I was quite happy with that. Then we had a safety briefing, got a safety beacon and tips for steering and manoeuvring on the water and through the expected rapids. And the fun began.
Großes Gekruschel bis alle soweit sind. Big rummaging until everyone was ready to go.
Der Whanganui Fluss erstreckt sich über 100 km und wir hatten 88 km vor uns in 3 Tagen.
Hier nochmal die verschiedenen Etappen pro Tag
Tag 1 started von Whakahoro bis John Coull, dort ist unser Abendquartier für die Nacht.
The Whanganui River covers over 100 km and we had 88 km to paddle in the 3 days.
Above is again a picture of the different distances per day.
Day 1 begins from Whakahoro Hut to the John Coull Hut and Campground for the night.
Kleine Mini-Stromschnellen und viele Strudel, und nicht sichtbare Steine, Stämme und Zweige im Flachwasser an denen man leicht hängenbleiben und umkippen kann.
Small mini rapids and a lot of currents, non-visible rocks, logs and snags in the shallow water that can make you stuck or tip over.
Das Wasser ist eher bräunlich und wir sahen einige Aale. The water is rather murky and we saw eels.
Hier an den Flussufern waren einiges an Wildziegen, Flussratten, Wildgänse und ne Kuh zu sehen.
Here at the edge of the water I saw quite a few wild goats, river rats, wild geese and a cow.
Anlegen, Pausen einlegen und bald sind wir auch schon am John Coull Nachtlager angekommen.
Set foot on land for breaks and not long in the afternoon we arrived at the John Coull Camp Hut.
Sonne und Regen wechselten sich ab, macht aber nichts, ich hatte ja alles Passende dabei.
Sun and rain took turns, but I didn't bother as I had sufficient gear with me.
Später Nachmittag: Ankunft beim Campingplatz und der Wanderhütte John Coull. Nun muss ich mir erstmal einen geeigneten Zeltplatz suchen, denn es ist bereits ziemlich voll..
Late afternoon: Arrival at the John Coull campsite and hut. It was already quite busy and most good camping spots were taken which made it tricky to find a good place to set up the tent.
Wer zuerst kommt... erhält den besten Platz! Hier hätte ich super gerne mein Zelt aufgestellt... schön geschützt under den Bäumen mit Privatsphäre, aber wer zu spät kommt den beißen die Hunde überrascht der Regen ..
First in first served... who gets the best spot! This would have been my favourite spot to pitch the tent... nicely private under the trees, but last one gets bitten by the dogs, I mean gets a wet arse I guess..
Hier wäre auch gegangen, aber alle latschen hier ständig vorbei so mitten im Weg ist nicht gut.
This would've been ok, but nah, everyone will be walking past all the time, it's in the walkway.
Bleibt mir ja nicht viel mehr übrig als mich hier auf den Platz hinzupflanzen. Eine große laute Gruppe, die gerade ihr Trinkgelage gestartet hat, das kann ja heiter werden!
🍻🥛🍺🍷🥂🍾🍼
I had no more choices left than to take this last spot amongst a rather large group that had just started their drinking party which could become interesting!
Also hatte ich mein klamm-nasses Zelt mal aufgebaut und meine Schlafmatratze daneben hochkannt aufgestellt damit es alles bis zum Abend trocknen kann. Ich hatte dann mit den anderen was zum Abendessen auf meinem Gaskocher zubereitet, eine Falteimer-"Dusche" und trockene saubere Anziehsachen sorgten für zufriedenes Wohlbefinden.
🚾+🚰+🧼
I pitched my rather wet tent and stood up my air bed mattress in the hope that it could hopefully dry out a bit before the night. I had some dinner and a "sink wash" as there are no showers, fresh dry clothes afterwards as a total wellbeing. Bliss.
Spaghetti Bolognese
🍝
Dann konnte ich nicht wirklich einschlafen und lag etwa 1,5 Stunden wach bis ich dann in der Nacht gegen 2:00 Uhr aufwachte - Regentropfen!
Leider wurde aus ein paar Tropfen ein ordentliches Regenschauer, was sich dann zu einer sehr starken Regenfront entwickelte und es pisste regelrecht in Strömen! Ich hörte das Tropfen in mein Zelt und wagte es nicht mich umzudrehen, denn jedesmal als ich mit dem Hintern oder den Füßen an die Zeltwand kam wurde ich nass und es lief Wasser ins Zeltinnere. Ich blieb den Rest der Nacht wach liegen und beobachtete das anschleichende Wasser und den ansteigenden Wasserpegel in meinem Zelt.
Keinen Schlaf, dafür im Wachzustand vor mich hinvegetiert und einen Notfall Fluchtplan ausgemalt.
🌧
I had a hard time falling asleep and lay awake for 1.5 hours until I woke up at 2am - it started raining. Unfortunately, a few drops of rain turned into a decent rain shower and then it was a pissing heavy downpour. I heard dripping of water into my tent and didn't dare to roll over anymore. With each touching of the tent layer with my bum or feete it got wetter. The inside of my tent filled with water and the water level rose. I stayed stationary in one position and tried to think about a potential emergency evacuation plan in case it gets worse. No sleep, but great to hear others had a snoring night of quality rest next to me.
Freitag, 27. Feb 2026 (Friday)
Das Disaster am Morgen: Es war wie ein guter Eimer voll Wasser im Inneren vom Zelt - egal, einfach einpacken und darum kümmere ich mich dann später. Ein paar Franzosen neben mir mussten meine sarkastischen Kommentare mitgehört haben und sagten: "Oh mein Gott, wie kannst du so positiv bleiben?!" hahah .. was willste machen :) Ich mach mir jetzt erstmal Frühstück.
The disaster in the morning. Equivalent to a full bucket of water tossed into the tent - I couldn't be bothered much and rolled it up and packed it away. Some French guys overheard my sarcastic comments to the tent and said "Oh my god, how can you stay so positive?!" hahah well, did I have a choice in this matter :) I'll deal with that later and have my breakfast now.
Tag 2 von John Coull Quartier nach Tieke Kainga, ein Maori Marae mit Wanderhütte und Zeltplatz.
Day 2 from John Coull Camp to Tieke Kainga, a Maori Marae Hut and Campground.
Anlegen an der Tieke Kainga, diese Kante hat rutschige Lehmklippen, sehr unwegsam und steil. Wir haben jeder 2 Fässer die recht schwer sind, gefüllt mit Kleidung und Nahrungsmitteln - diese müssen wir ganze 500m bis zur Hütte hochschleppen. Meine Fässer liegen irgendwo zwischen 10-25 kg Gewicht plus Rucksack und der Beutel mit dem noch immer nassen schwere Zelt/Schlafmatratze...
Ich bin zunächst mit den kleinen leichten Taschen hochgelaufen um mir einen Eindruck zu verschaffen, und ich war fix und fertig oben angekommen. Dann sah ich einen kleinen Schuppen mit Feuerholz und eine Schiebkarre davor - meine Lösung war da! Also, mit der Karre den ganzen Weg runter, die Fässer eingeladen und das Zeugs die Strecke wieder hochgewuppt. Eine Bandscheiben-brechende Aktion!
Arrival at the Tieke Kainga Hut with unfortunate poor access over slippery clay edges. It was quite annoying to bring all your heavy gear in barrels up the long never ending 500m pathway. I first thought that's a joke! My barrels weigh each about 10-25 kg filled with clothes and food plus the dry bags/backpack and sleeping camping stuff that was still soaking wet and heavy. I decided to walk it up first to get the first impression of it and took my lightweight bags up first. Then I saw a little firewood shed with a wheelbarrow in front - The Solution! I am not dragging those heavy barrels over the slippery fields, its a back breaking action. It was great using the wheelbarrow instead :) Work smarter not harder.
Von dort steile Grass- und Lehmhänge rauf/runter? Bin ich froh, dass mir ne Karre bereitgestellt ist!
😕😅😯
From here up and down the clay and grass edges? Glad they left a wheelbarrow for me to use.
Der heilige Boden vor dem Marae durfte nicht bezeltet werden. Ich hatte mein klatschnasses Geschehen aufgehängt und die Schlafmatte aufgestellt und beides ist gut abgetrocknet.
The holy ground in front of the Marae is not permitted for camping. I hung up my saturated tent and sleeping mat, both of which dried out ok.
Die Hütte Tieke Kainga mit Regenwasser-Tanks. Das Wasser muss vor dem Benutzen immer abgekocht werden, oder mit sog. Aquatabs behandelt werden, sogar zum Zähneputzen.
The hut Tieke Kainga has rainwater tanks and the water must be boiled or treated with Aqua Tabs before using it, even for brushing your teeth.
Abendessen - Dinner time
Von der Hütte zu den Toiletten (Plumpsklos) war es ein ganzes Stück. Es war auch gut so, denn der bestialische Gestank war erstickend.
From the hut to the toilets (long drops) is a long way away, but it was good this way as they have an unbearable suffocating stench.
Der lange Weg zu den Klos
The long way to the loos
Am besten immer Feuchttücher mitbringen!
Wet wipes are your best friend afterwards!
Innen in der Wanderhütte waren die Schlafmatten direkt nebeneinander. Da meine Sachen noch immer total nass waren und Regen über Nacht angesagt war, hatte ich einfach keinen Bock mehr auf zelten, geschweige denn den klatschnassen Kram nochmal aufzubauen, so schlich ich mich in das Innere ein und besetzte ein Bettplatz. Nicht das ich irgendwie besser geschlafen hätte - der Penner der neben mir lag hatte so laut geschnarcht das das Bett vibrierte = ich über treibe nicht. Zum Glück war da aber noch ein Pärchen und die schnarchten beide abwechselnd. Ich musste 4 mal in der Nacht aufstehen und pinkeln.
Nach dem Frühstück fing es wieder ordentlich an zu regnen.
~~~~~~~

Inside the hut were sleeping mats on wooden frame bunk beds. All directly next to each other and sleeps 24 people. I couldn't be bothered with setting up my soaking wet tent and sneaked into the bunks. But that didn't mean I slept any better that night. The guy next to me snored so badly it made the bed vibrate - no joke! But to my luck, gladly I had a couple staying the night in the same room which took turns snoring... I had to get up 4 times in the night to pee...

After a good breakfast, off we go back on the water. It started raining quite a bit.

To go on the walking trek to the Bridge to Nowhere, you have to climb over this steep rope netting.

The "Bridge to Nowhere" (1936)
Indeed, in the middle of lush dense bush appears a massive concrete bridge that was once established with optimism but sooner or later crumbled away as its access gravel roads due to poor planning and more bad weather conditions. Scarce resources also led to reality and they struggled to continue with the connection between Raetihi and the isolated Mangapūrua Valley.

🌊🌊🌊🛶

On the last leg of the river journey were the famous 50/50 rapids who have earned their name from the fact that only 50% of the paddlers make it over these rapids without falling in or having a drowning boat.
I was on a kayak, so I felt quite over-confident and unfussed. I heard the others doing their worry-talk and decided to just go for it and I will find out what the water does with me. I am not in fear of dying haha, well, in this case falling into the water. No time to worry, let's go for it!

It wasn't really that bad, actually full of fun and exciting. I have never done anything like that and stayed on and dry Yaaaay.
When I looked around for the others who followed me, I saw the first canoe capsized, then the next one followed and flipped upside down. I turned around to the currents and checked where I could help them.

After a little more paddling we arrived in Pipiriki, the end of the river adventure.

Gottseidank nur 30 Minuten im Bus zurück zum Raetihi Ferienpark. Das schaffe ich auch noch!
And thank goodness it's only a 30 min bus ride back to the Raetihi Holiday Park. I'll be fine!

Kohi Kippers

Bye bye!

🥕

Quickly unloading and sorting stuff, have a nice warm shower and get into clean clothes before we leave back to Auckland. We stopped for fish and chips on the way home and saw a giant carrot - an opportunity for a funny photo.

Danke Sara!

My house sitter Sara is from Spain and currently travelling as a backpacker through New Zealand. I am so happy I have her again this time while I am away. Muchas Gracias Sara :)
