IISA 🧊🏊 Championship, Alexandra 2026

15. - 18.7.2026 NZ & Oceania National Ice Swimming Championship, NZ

IISA - International Ice Swimming Association (die internationale Eis-Schwimmvereinigung) hält auch in diesem Jahr wieder mitten im Winter die Freibad-Nationalmeisterschaften im Eisschwimmen ab. Getroffen wird sich auf der Südinsel in Otago/Alexandra. Die ortsansässigen Skigebiete sind nicht weit und locken viele Wintersportler während wir im Eiswasser schwimmen bei unter 5C.

IISA - International Ice Swimming Association is again holding the National Pool Ice Champs at the outdoor pool in Alexandra, Otago located on the South Island. The surrounding local ski fields attract many winter sports lovers, while we're swimming in water temps below 5C.

Die Vorbereitungen - The preparation

Das Packen zog sich wirklich endlos lang… bis ich endlich mal dazu gekommen bin, meine 7 Sachen vernünftig zu packen, war es bereits der Abend vor dem Flug!

The packing took ages and forever endless until I finally got around to getting my stuff together, it was already the night before the flight!

Der Flug - The flight

Auckland - Queenstown, aber so einfach ist das nicht, denn direkt nach dem Einsteigen und vollendetem Boarding waren Passagiere, die bereits ihre Koffer aufgegeben hatten nicht an Bord. Somit kam die Durchsage, dass diese jeweiligen Gepäckstücke wieder manuell von Hand aus dem bereits geladenen Flugzeug herausgeholt werden müssen und der Flug sich entsprechend verzögert…

Das darf ja wohl nicht wahr sein. Sowas hab ich auch noch nicht gehört.

Auckland - Queenstown, but wait, it's not quite that straightforward.. Directly after the concluded boarding, we had an announcement that checked-in luggage was loaded, but the passengers were not on board. Therefore, these suitcases had to be manually unloaded from the aircraft, and this could delay the flight. I can't believe it - I never heard this before on my travels.

Ankunft am Mittwoch, 15. Juli 2026 - Arrival on Wednesday, 15th July 2026

Die Trittleitern am Beckenrand gibt es nur im Eisschwimmen, als Sicherheit für die Schwimmer beim Ein- und Aussteigen des Pools.

The step ladders at the pool edge are only standard in ice swimming for safe pool entry and exit.

Zunächst musste ich zügig zum Wettkampfpool, um dort meine Registrierung für die Schwimmveranstaltung abzuwickeln, denn jeder Schwimmer muss vorher eine zweite medizinische Untersuchung bestehen. Anschließend konnte man von 15:00 bis 16:00 Uhr den Außenpool zum Testschwimmen nutzen, wo jeder bis zu 100 m in ungefähr 4 °C Wassertemperatur schwimmen konnte.

Firstly, every competitive swimmer had to be at the pool before 3pm to complete the registration and a second medical assessment. Afterwards, from 3-4pm, the outdoor competition pool could be used by swimmers with up to 100m distance to have a test swim at around 4 °C.

Nach der kurzen Aufwärmphase ging es wieder ins Kälte. Denn Marty, Wei Ping und ich hatten uns entschlossen etwas Curling zu spielen. Die Eisanlage war ja gleich nebenan und wir hatten Spaß!

After the swim with a short warm up phase, we got back into the cold again. Marty, Wei Ping and I played curling at the nearby ice rink. We had a lot of fun!

Väterchen Frost war auch schon da. Und rechts im Bild bekommt man Anti-Rutsch-Gummiüberzieher für die Schuhsohlen. Nur so kann man auf dem Eis laufen und Curling spielen. Auf geht's!

Father Frost was already there. And in the photo on the right, you'll get some shoe covers for your soles to actually be able to walk on the ice and play curling. Let's go!

Curlingsteine sind aus 2 Schichten Granit mit unterschiedlicher Festigkeit und Kondition. Nur so gleiten sie über die Eisfläche.

Curling stones are made of 2 different types and layers of granite which consist of different velocities and shapes to be able to glide over the ice surface. 

    

Dann war da noch der Schiebestock für die alten Leute, fand ich aber bald besser und ergonomischer als vom Boden der Eisfläche aus zu schieben.

And then there's this stick for the elderly folks to push the stone without having to go down to the ice surface. I actually found this easier and better.

Die Unterkunft habe ich mir dieses Mal bei einem Pferdehof organisiert. Es ist nur 4 km vom Wettkampfpool entfernt und zwischen den Pferden ganz rustikal und idyllisch, und das ist doch immer am besten.

My accommodation is this time nearby on a farm stay amongst horses. Only 4 km away from the competition outdoor pool, it will be quite rustic and idyllic, which is always the best.

Es war eine sehr tolle Unterkunft mit reichlicher Auswahl an Frühstück, leckerem Kaffee, Tee usw., und es war sehr schön, mit den beiden abends zusammen Reiten im TV zu sehen. Wo sonst hat man das?

It was a super nice accommodation with plentyful breakfast variety, nice coffee and teas etc and it was relaxing to watch equestrian on TV together. Where else do you get this? :)

Bei Ann & Bernie hätte ich auch direkt bleiben können. Es war so angenehm und freundlich, sehr gemütlich und warm bei ihnen, dass ich mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit wiederkommen werde.

I stayed with the 2 lovely hosts Ann & Bernie and could have just stayed there. I felt very comfortable and they were so warm welcoming and friendly which made my stay the best and I'll be back!

Dann geht's in den ersten Wettkampf: Es beginnt für mich mit der längsten Distanz 500m, gleich als Erstes in der ersten Veranstaltung, Bahn 1 - ich bin soweit.

Then off to the first event: It begins with my longest distance of 500m, first to go, event 1, lane 1 and I'm ready.

Danach folgten noch 250m, 100m, und 50m Kraulschwimmen und 50m Brustschwimmen und ein 4x50m Team Relay.

I also swam 250m, 100m, 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke plus a 4x50m freestyle team relay.

Und so sieht das aus wenn man seine Bestzeit übertroffen hat und damit für die Eis-Weltmeisterschaften qualifiziert ist. Unten ist eine Übersicht der Zeiten pro 50m mit sog. Teil- und Gesamtzeiten pro Bahn, da im Eisschwimmen strenge Sicherheitsprotokolle gelten und Schwimmer extremen Bedingungen ausgesetzt sind, helfen diese bei der späteren Wertung und medizinischen Kontrolle.

And this is what it looks like when you realise that you have improved your personal best time by more than a minute and therefore have qualified for the Ice Swimming World Championship. Below is a time sheet for my 500m with split and total swim time. These are for keeping track of a swimmer's stroke and ability which also may help with the medical support later.

Nach einer knappen Stunde war ich auch wieder aufgetaut und warm geworden, hatte meine warme Miso Suppe aus und fuehlte mich wiederhergestellt. Vielen Dank an unser Experten-Medizinisches Team mit Dr. Karen Bisley und allen, die uns im Aufwärmraum gut umsorgen und sicherstellen, dass es uns gut geht.

After almost an hour warming up time I felt back to being warm, thawed and finished my warming Miso soup. I was recovered and back normal. I have to give special thanks to our expert medical team who have looked after us so well to ensure max. care, support and they made sure everyone was safe and looked after. 

Ich schwamm bis zu 2 Schwimmdistanzen am Tag, ansonsten hatte ich mitgeholfen beim Zeitnehmen, bei der Sicherheit und den Schwimmeinheiten sowie bei der Unterstützung der Schwimmer, z.B. aus dem Wasser zu helfen, zur Umkleide zu begleiten und beim An- und Ausziehen zu helfen.

I had up to 2 swim events per day, otherwise I was helping with timekeeping, safety observation and swimmer's support by helping them out of the water, shoulder them to the changing rooms and getting them dressed.

Hier werden die 500m Schwimmer gleich warm mit Handtuch und Schwimmparka zugedeckt und in die Umkleideräume begleitet. Ich habe mir von meinen Mitschwimmern sagen lassen, es sieht aus als wollte ich Joy hier kidnappen :)

Here are the finished 500m swims who are immediately covered with towel and dry robe to support them to the changing room. My swim mates said it looks like I am kidnapping Joy here LOL

Donnerstag: Clyde Tour on Thursday

Emilia und ich waren gemeinsam mal in Richtung Clyde gefahren, nur kurze 10 Minuten Autofahrt und wir sahen uns mal um.

Clyde hat viele Fahrradwanderwege, eine kleines idyllisches Dorf und einen Flusslauf.

Emilia and I decided to go for a short road trip to Clyde, only about 10 minutes drive by car to have a look around. Clyde is small, but has a few cycling treks, an idyllic village and a river stream.

 

Hier ist das Ende vom Otago Fahrradweg. Dieser erstreckt sich über 150 km. Diese Unternehmung habe ich schon seit einiger Zeit im Auge, nur fehlt mir dazu etwas die richtige Zeit, und alleine hab ich da wenig Lust drauf. Kann man entweder mit normalen oder E-Rädern abfahren.

Here's the end of the Otago Rail Trail. This is a 150 km cycling path and this sits in my head for quite some time. I'm lacking the mojo and can't be bothered doing this alone on my own, bit boring I guess. There's the option of hiring a normal bike or and e-bike.

Wollt's nur erwähnen falls jemand Bock hat... Just saying if anyone's keen....

Dann kamen wir an diesem Restaurant vorbei, das gerade geöffnet hatte: eine Pizzeria, Bar & Grill

Oh, was hab ich Bock da drauf heute Abend ne schöne leckere Pizza aus dem Steinofen zu essen!!!

Emilia hatte auch Lust auf Pizza und wir beide fanden das wir das wohl verdienten nach unseren Schwimmerfolgen. Mal sehen, wer noch so dabei ist heute Abend.

Then we passed this restaurant, they just opened: A Pizzeria, Bar & Grill. Oh, how much I fancied a yummy pizza from the wood fired stone oven! Emilia was also quite keen to go later and we decided that we deserved it well after our successful swims. Let's see if anyone else is keen to go tonight.

Pizza Abend - Pizza Night

Also, ich wollte was anderes als Fertiggerichte, Knabbersachen oder belegte Brötchen.

Ich rief zum Pizza-Abend aus und zack, waren wir 12 am reservierten Tisch beim Paulina's in Clyde.

I really wanted something different, not again ready meals from the supermarket or filled bread rolls.

I called to action with a Pizza night and bang! we were 12 at the reserved table at Paulina's in Clyde.

Wie super lecker diese Steinofen Pizza war und dazu noch ne gierige knusprige salzige Portion Pommes war der reinste Genuss.

How fantastic and yummy these wood-fired pizzas were and the additional greedy portion of crispy, salty fries was a superb treat here.

Dann.... Abends, gerade das Abendessen fertig und zusammen Fernsehen geschaut, hörten wir ein Erdbeben näherkommen und nur wenige Augenblicke später fing der Boden unter uns an zu zittern!

Die Lampe im Esszimmer baumelte hin und her, und die Pferde wurden etwas unsicher, und so auch ich!!

In Te Anau war ein Erdbeben mit einer Magnitude von 5,9 das sich bis zu uns erstreckt hatte. Es gab aber danach keine weiteren Vorfälle.

Then... in the evening, we sat relaxed watching Equestrian on TV and suddenly an earthquake sound of a roaring appeared followed by a shaking beneath our feet so that the ceiling lamp in the dining room jangled back and forth. The horses got a little unsure and so felt I!

In Te Anau was a strong earthquake which reached us too, but there were no further events after.

Freitag/Friday

Ich war mit Ann und ihren Pferden ausreiten. Es war einfach ein toller Nachmittag mit Sonnenschein und wir waren durch die Otago-Wanderwege geritten und die Pferde hatten Spaß. Leider haben wir keine Fotos davon gemacht. Ich habe die Natur und den Moment einfach so genossen.

I was with Ann and her horses for a hackout ride through the afternoon sunshine on the hiking trails in the beautiful Otago region. The horses and us loved it but unfortunately, I didn't take any photos and instead absorbed the nature and the moment as it was.

Letzter Tag! Final Day!

Am letzten Tag, Samstag, war unser Team Relay "Vereinigte Nationen"

Prize Giving Dinner

Im nahegelegenen Alexandra District Club waren die Räumlichkeiten für unsere Veranstaltung reserviert. Es wurden alle Schwimmer geehrt für ihre Leistungen und anschließend gab es ein leckeres Abendessen-Buffet mit verschiedenen Sorten Braten, Gemüse, Salate und Nachtisch (Vanilleeis mit roter Grütze und Baiser mit Sahne, Kaffee und Teesortiment war zudem angeboten)

In the local Alexandra District Club was the prize-giving dinner where all swimmers were awarded for their performance. Afterwards was a yummy buffet dinner with different roasts, vegetables, salads and a dessert with ice cream and a red berry compote, mini pavlovas with whipped cream. In addition, an assortment of coffee and tea was available as well.

Leider hatte ich kein Bild vom Essen gemacht, war aber ähnlich wie im Jahr 2024.

Am nächsten Tag ging es morgens nach dem Frühstück mit gut 1 Stunde Autofahrt wieder in Richtung Queenstown Flughafen und zurück nach Auckland. Ich hatte diesmal einen Flug um 12.10 Uhr damit ich mich nicht mit glatten Straßenverhältnissen auseinandersetzen muss.

The next morning was the day to return to the airport with a good 1h drive to Queenstown to catch the flight at noon, so I don't need to get through potentially icy roads and can travel relaxed and easy this time without having to leave early or feel rushed.

Ankunft in Auckland war auch wie geplant, ein Uber-Taxi nach Hause und was für eine nette Überraschung von meinen Haussittern. Lukas ist Deutscher und hat mir ein Brot gebacken. Kaylee, seine Partnerin hat eine Willkommenskarte geschrieben. Ich habe mich sehr gefreut. Danke!

Arrival in Auckland was in time, then an Uber Taxi home and a surprise awaited me from my house sitters. Lukas, German, baked a bread and his partner Kaylee wrote a welcome home card with wishes that made me very happy to get home like this. Thank you!

Da ich mich mit all meinen Schwimmdistanzen zur Weltmeisterschaft im Eisschwimmen qualifiziert habe, bin ich wieder offiziell ins Team Neuseeland Frozen Ferns angekündigt worden.

Ich werde somit im Januar 2027 in Oradea, Rumänien bei den Weltmeisterschaften dabei sein. Ich habe bereits meine Schwimmdistanzen registriert und bin in voller Erwartung und Freude dies erleben zu dürfen.

In all swim distances, I met the qualifying times for the upcoming Ice Swimming World Championship and therefore was announced as being taken on the Team New Zealand Frozen Ferns to represent our country in January 2027 in Oradea, Romania. I am very grateful to have this opportunity to be a part of the Ice Swimming World Championship. This makes me very proud and excited to experience this.
