Freitag auf Sonntag - langes Wochenende und ich habe günstige Flüge bekommen, bin nach Queenstown um dort in den kalten Seen zu schwimmen und mich auf meine IISA NZ Eismeisterschaften für nächsten Monat vorzubereiten.
Friday to Sunday - I got cheap discounted flights to Queenstown and spent some of the long weekend there to swim in the cold southern lakes to have the best possible preparation for the upcoming IISA NZ Ice Swimming event next month.

Ich hatte mir ein privates Einzelzimmer gebucht mit eigenen Bad. Hatte null Bock auf irgendwelche 4er, 6er oder 8er Zimmer mit anderen zu teilen. Oh nöö, will meine Privatsphäre!
I booked a private room to myself with my own ensuite. I had zero interest in sharing a 4, 6 or 8 person dorm with others! NO WAY!

Abends war ich noch eine Runde durch die Gegend, zum Wasser und dann hatte ich mir meine mitgebrachte Suppe mit der noch vorhandenen Wandertüte "Kartoffelbrei" warm gemacht und entschloss mich es im Zimmer zu essen.
Ist mit doch mein dummes eh schon halb ertrunkenes Handy in die mitgebrachte Suppe gerutscht! Das auch noch... wo es doch grade erst im März das Ertrinken auf der Wanderung überlebt hatte.... egal... sauber gewischt und müde ins Bett gefallen.

I went for a stroll around the town and to the waterfront, later I cooked my soup I brought with me and prepared my spare package of camping mashed potatoes mix, decided to eat in in my room... than of course.... I dropped my phone into my soup bowl. It had survived the drowning back in March and is this necessary... doesn't matter... I wiped it clean and just off tired to bed.

Ich wurde gegen 8.15 morgens von Bethany abgeholt. Wir treffen uns immer zum kalten Schwimmen wenn ich in Queenstown bin. Sie ist auch jedes Jahr beim Eisschwimmen dabei und prima gemeinsam kalt zu schwimmen. Am Samstag morgen waren wir sogar 4 Schwimmer von den Southern Lakes Club.
I got picked up around 8.15am and met Bethany. We always meet when I am in Queenstown and we swim together and get cold together. Both of us participate in the Ice Swimming Champs every year and best to prepare together. On Saturday morning we were 4 swimmers - from the Southern Lakes Club.
4 verschiedene Schwimmkappenfarben gehen gleich schwimmen! Zufàlligerweise waren 3 unserer Schwimmkappen alle vom Ruby Island Schwimmveranstaltung Anfang des Jahres. Die Farben stehen für verschiedene Distanzen 2.5km/5km/10km.

Großartig! Wir sind über 700m geschwommen, Lufttemperatur 12C, Wassertemperatur um die 7-8C! We swam over 700m together. Great! The air temperature was 12C and the water temp around 7-8C!
Nach den anfànglichen Regenfällen hatte es dann doch tatsächlich aufgehört und die Sonne kam sogar raus. Hatte mich dann entschieden die guten 6 km zurückzulaufen. War ja immer am Wasser entlang und total schöne Landschaft mit trockenem Wetter. Dann mal los!

In der Innenstadt angekommen, hatte ich erstmal Hunger und ein sog. Fergburger musste es sein!

Die Fergburgers sind ja immer lecker, aber ich bevorzuge es wenn die Qualität ebenso gut ist. Ich finde ja einen weniger zermatschten Burger etwas besser!
The Fergburgers are just yummy, but I prefer a good quality of it too and don't like it when they have a squashed burger bun like this.

QUEENSTOWN - die Winterlichter sind wieder an auf der Südinsel !
Neben den kalten Schwimmen ist auch das Lichterfest auf dem Plan. Ich hatte mir rechtzeitig eine Eintrittskarte zum Besuch des Lichterfestivals LUMA ergattert. Letztes Jahr war ich auch dort, aber hatte mehr durch Zufall erfahren, das ich zum Wochenende mit dem Lichterfest dort war. Es war ausverkauft, aber eine Einzelkarte konnte ich dennoch bekommen. Es war total schön und ich bin dann dieses Jahr auch wieder da!

This long weekend, besides the swims, I would visit to the LUMA Festival of Lights. I bought my entry ticket in advance, as this is a very popular event which I discovered only last year when I was there for a lake swim event. And by coincidence, I found out that there was a festival of lights at the same time. 2023 I was lucky enough to get one single entry ticket as the event was sold out. It was beautiful and well put together, so I am back!
Meine Unterkunft ist nur ganze 350m oder 5 min vom Lake Whakatipu (dem See Whakatipu) und dem Queenstown Stadtgarten entfernt. Das macht es sehr praktisch und einfach in das Zentrum zu Fuss zu gelangen ohne viel Aufwand und Verkehr.
My accommodation is only a 5 min stroll away with 350m walking distance to the Lake Whakatipu and Queenstown Garden. Its nice and easy convenient to get to the city centre and without any traffic or hassle to the event site.
Nun aber zum LUMA - eine Veranstaltung die jedes Jahr stattfindet.

Am nächsten Morgen war ich kurz nach Sonnenaufgang zum See und war dort schwimmen. Es waren nochmals etwa 500m und ich war um 3 Bojen, ein Boot und eine kleine Schwimmplattform herumgeschwimmen. Es war so früh morgens am Gefrierpunkt bei 0C und die Innenstadt war sogar ein klein wenig auf den Gehwegen gefroren.
The next morning, just after sunset I went to the lake again for another cold swim. The air temperature was at freezing point 0C and I managed to swim 500m around 3 buoys, a boat and a small pontoon. The inner city centre was still sleepy and some of the walkways were slightly frozen.

Nach der Aufwärmphase gab es ein Frühstück und dann war ich bei dem Kiwi Bird Park, ein Vogelpark in Richtung Gondel. Da war ich schon lange nicht mehr und ist nur ein paar Gehminuten entfernt.

Das Tuatara
ist ein neuseeländisches friedliches Reptil und eins der verbleibenden Lebewesen aus der Zeit der Dinosaurier. Es ernährt sich von Insekten, Käfern etc und hat eine Länge von etwa einem halben Meter und kann bis zu 100 Jahre alt werden. Es ist ein geschütztes harmloses Tier was unter Artenschutz steht.

Habe mich dann mal langsam wieder auf den Weg zurück gemacht und vorher noch beim Ferbbaker vorbei. Diese Ferg-Bäckerei bietet nicht nur Hamburger mit Pommes an, sondern auch leckere Backwaren wie wir sie aus Deutschland kennen. Ich habe mir einige Bretzel mitgebracht und diese lecker genossen. Und als ich auf dem Flughafen in Queenstown auf meinen Rückflug gewartet habe, gab es einen kleinen Sicherheitsalarm da eine herrenlose Stofftasche im Wartebereich bei den Gates stand. Die Flughafensicherheit und das Bombenkommando der Polizei kam mit dem Schnüffelhund vorbei um das verdächtigte Bombentäschchen sicherheitsgemäß abzuführen.

Then I made myself towards airport homebound to Auckland, but before that happened a short stop at the nearby Fergbaker was a must do. This local awesomeness does not only offer hamburgers and chips, it has its neighboring Fergbaker with all the delicious breads and pretzels as we know them from Germany. I bought a few pretzels for my return flight back and ate some while I was waiting at the airport in Queenstown. And as I was just sitting there in peace, a security guard called the dog squat with detection dogs for explosives to check the unattended pink bag which was in suspicion being a bomb-alarm. But this was luckily not the case and this fabric false alarm has been taken away without further fuss.

Back in Auckland I arrived tired and happy but with way too many Pretzels!
Ich war müde und zufrieden wieder in Auckland angekommen und hatte viel zu viele Bretzel dabei!
