Die Cook Inseln mit Rarotonga und Aitutaki erwarteten mich! Ich hatte dieses Reiseziel schon eine ganz lange Zeit im Visier. Oftmals saß ich am Flughafen und gegenüber am anderen Gate ging es für ein paar glückliche Gesichter zu den Pazifikinseln und ich sehnte mich auch danach eines Tages dort hin zu reisen. Nun endlich ist die Urlaubszeit auch für mich gekommen, denn ich hatte mit meiner Schwimmgruppe den Swim Holiday gebucht.

The Cook Islands with Rarotonga and Aitutaki await me. I had this travel destination in mind for a long time. Often, when I sat at the airport and watched travelers at the opposite gate who were on their flight to Raro, I felt like going to this piece of paradise myself. Finally, this is the time for me to on Swim Holiday with likeminded swimmers from our local group.

Meine Unterkunft ist für die nächsten paar Übernachtungen im Edgewater Resort & Spa bevor es dann mit einem kleinen Inter-Inselflug zur Cook Insel Aitutaki geht. 

Aber wo genau sind diese Pazifikinseln denn eigentlich? Unten ist eine Karte die dies beantwortet.

My accommodation for the next couple of days are at the Edgewater Resort & Spa before we head off by interislander flight to the little Cook Island of Aitutaki. 

But where are these pacific islands actually located? Below is a world map that should answer your questions.

Meine Hauptreisezeit war auf Aitutaki; nur etwa ein Drittel der Größe von Rarotonga, wo ich die ersten 4 Tage/Nächte verbrachte und dann am Sonntag für weitere 6 Tage/Nächte den SchwimmUrlaub hatte.

My main travel time was in Aitutaki; which is about one third of the size of Rarotonga, where I stayed for the first 4 days/nights of the trip, then on Sunday, I flew to Aitutaki for the swim tour for 6 days/nights.

Von Auckland ging es los, am Donnerstag, den 4. September und am Mittwoch, den 3. September bin ich angekommen! Ich fliege heute in der Gegenwart los, bin knappe 4 Stunden in der Luft und komme gestern an, erlebe den Tag also zweimal :)

I left from Auckland on the Thursday, 4th September and I landed on Wednesday 3rd September! I leave here in the present and after a 4h flight I experience the day twice!

Zeitzonen - Time zones

Der Flug.... mein Bildschirm ging nicht. Hatte mich 2x beschwert und dann einen Premiumsitz in der besseren Klasse erhalten  :) mit extra Beinfreiheit und lecker essen! Ich trink keinen Alkohol, der wäre allerdings umsonst inbegriffen, aber nicht für mich und schonmal gar nicht mitten am hellichten Tag, es war grade mal später vormittag?!

The flight..... my monitor didn't work. I complained 2x about it and then I received a premium seat in the better class :) happy days with extra leg room and a very delicious meal included! I don't drink alcohol, which would be included, but not for me and not at all during the day - it was late morning?!

Ankunft in Rarotonga, kleine Flug-Landebahn. Besucher werden mit einem duftenden Blumenkranz empfangen, der aus echten frischen Blüten gemacht ist.

Mein bestellter Shuttle Service zum Hotel war bereits da und hatte mich erwartet. Allerdings war ich etwas irritiert zu sehen, dass die Fahrerin ihren Anschnallgurt hinter den Fahrersitz geklemmt hatte. Denn hier fährt absolut niemand angeschnallt. Rollerfahrer sind auch alle ohne Helme unterwegs, dafür aber mit Bikini und Flip Flops "angemessen" bekleidet wenn man das so nennen kann LOL

My booked hotel shuttle service was already there and awaiting me. Lovely lady, but I was a little confused to see that she had her seat belt attached behind the driver seat. Here, everyone drives without wearing seat belts and scooter drivers do not wear helmets either, instead they see bikinis and flip flops as 'sufficient'. LOL

Keine Deutschland-Flagge, da ich ja mit dem Neuseeländischen Reisepass eingereist bin! Diese hätte bestimmt an der 4. Flaggenstange gehangen.
No flag of Germany anymore, because I travelled with my New Zealand passport! It would have been showing on the 4th flag pole.

Ziemlich große Anlage! Koffer abstellen und dann werde ich doch gleich erstmal die Gegend erkunden.

I parked my suitcase and went to explore this huge hotel complex. It's pretty big here.

Jeden Abend gab es ein anderes kulinarisches Thema im Restaurant. Heute Abend sind es Meeresfrüchte, Garnelen und Muscheln mit vor Ort Grillen! Da bin ich gern dabei.

Every night the restaurant had a different culinary theme. Tonight it is seafood night on a cooking show. I'm in as I had nothing else planned.

Das Hotel hat freilaufende Hühner in den netten Gartenanlagen, ein Waschhaus wo Gäste ihre Kleidung waschen können. Es gibt außerdem ein tägliches Unterhaltungsprogramm.

The hotel features free-range chickens in its well-maintained gardens, as well as a laundry house where guests can use the washing machine.

There's also daily entertainment for anyone.

Nun aber hoch ins Hotelzimmer. Ich bin in Nummer 1015 mit Balkon und Blick auf den Garten und das Meer.

Now, up to the hotel room. I'm in number 1015 large room with balcony and views over the gardens and the ocean.

Ich hatte mein eigenes Moskitonetz dabei, keine Lust auf abendliche Störenfriede (Mücken) sollten da welche sein... waren aber zum Glück keine und ich hatte einen guten Schlaf im bequemen Bett.

I packed my own mosquito net, just in case as I cannot be bothered dealing with mossies all night. Should there be any... but this was not the case and I slept well in the comfortable large bed.

Frühstücksbuffet den nächsten Morgen - Breakfast buffet the next morning

Ich war so gegen 8:00 Uhr da, spätestens so um 8:30 Uhr da ich keine Lust auf Menschenmengen, Gedrängel und Anstehschlangen hatte. Prima! Niemand bislang da. Freie Auswahl :)

I arrived to the breakfast around 8:00 am but not much later than 8:30am. I don't like dealing with large crowds of people lining up and waiting in a queue. I like it with peace and quiet and that worked well. Primo nobody here yet - choices are on!

So ab 9:00 Uhr oder sogar 9:30 Uhr war es gerammelt voll und die Platten zum Teil leergefressen. Die Brötchen waren kalt und trocken, nicht mehr warm und zart wie ich meins genossen habe. Kaffee, Milch und Obst wurden regelmäßig aufgefüllt, was für einige Warten bedeutete... Ich hatte ja bereits gefrühstückt und war amüsiert, das Geschehen beim Kaffee und Saft in Ruhe zu beobachten.

From about 9:00 am or even 9:30 am the breakfast room was congested full and overcrowded, the plates were partially grazed empty. The bread rolls appeared dry and stale, not warm and tender anymore. Some people had to wait for fresh coffee, milk and more fruit to come. I already had my breakfast before everyone else and was amused to watch the breakfast crowd with my fresh glass of juice or call it coffee time observation.

Am nächsten Tag wollte ich mal was größeres machen, also wurde mir nach dem Frühstück mein gebuchtes E-Fahrrad gebracht. Nun bin ich mobil and kann ganz bequem überall flexibel hinfahren. Es gibt einen öffentlichen Busverkehr, aber was weiß ich, ob der überhaupt irgendwie zu Potte kommt, denn wir wissen ja zu gut, wie hier die sog. Zeit der langsamen Inseluhr tickt... (Island time..)

The first day, I felt like doing something and getting out to see what's around, so after breakfast my hired e-bike was delivered to the hotel. Now, I am mobile and have the flexibility to get to where I want. There is a public bus, but god knows if they are really coming as we know to good about Island Time...

Klasse! Jetzt kann's losgehen mit meinem orangen Schwimmtop, zur eigenen Sicherheit damit ich von den anderen Fahrern auf der Straße gesehen werde und Helm auf - brauchte ich aber nicht, denn hier fahren alle recht langsam, und auf manchen abgelegenen Straßen waren Unebenheiten auf der linken Fahrbahn mit teilweise Schlaglöchern und.... hier herrscht Island-Time! (bedeutete so viel wie unendliche Ruhe und Gelassenheit der Einheimischen hier auf den Inseln.) Es kam oftmals vor, das Autos und Roller für eine längere Zeit hinter mir hergetuckert sind ohne irgendeinen nervigen Moment oder Beschwerde)

Excellent! Let's go in my bright orange swim top and helmet on - to be seen by other road users for safety, but this wasn't really necessary. Most are driving slow here anyways and some backroads have a few potholes or uneven surfaces. And in general.... it's Island Time! (which means in general a very chillaxed attitude, no rushing and the endless patience of some cars and scooters who were snail trailing right behind me without any compains or disruptions at all)

Ich kam an einer Tankstelle vorbei, die Oase = Oasis genannt ist :) und hatte einen kleinen örtlichen Stand entdeckt, an dem ich etwas Obst gekauft hatte und meine Wasserflasche mit Filterwasser aufgefüllt hatte. Hier sollte man das Leitungswasser nicht trinken. Nur zum Erwähnen: Jedes Teil Obst kostet $5 NZD aber das Wasser ist kostenlos an der Filter-Wasser-Station.

I passed a petrol station called Oasis :) with a small shop and a little local market stand. I bought some fruit and re-filled my water bottle from the free of charge filtered water station. It's not safe to drink the tap water. Funny enough, every piece of fruit costs $5 (NZ currency)

 

Die Bananen sind GANZ anders als ihr die aus Deutschland! Irgendwie kürzer, eckiger und vor allem SEHR VIEL LECKERER und mit dem doppelten sonnengereiften Geschmack als ihr es kennt.

The local bananas are VERY different from the ones we know from Germany! They are a little shorter and more square, but significantly MUCH MORE TASTY and have twice the sunriped full flavor.

Freilaufende Hunde gibt es hier überall. Aber in der Regel gilt auch für diese die "Island-Time", da sie meistens irgendwo entspannt herumliegen und mal gelegentlich vorbeischauen, ob es etwas Futter von den Menschen gibt. Dieser hatte ein Halsband um und sah gut aus, also glaube ich sogar, dass er einer Familie in der Nähe gehört. Der freute sich als ich ihn angesprochen hatte und kam zu mir.

Free range dogs are everywhere. Generally safe and they're also having "island-time" as they're laying around and seem relaxed, occasionally say hi and check if you have some food for them. This one has a collar on and is in good condition; I would assume that he belongs to a local family. He was quite friendly and came to me when I spoke to him.

Ich bin tatsächlich einmal ganz mit dem Fahrrad um die Insel Rarotonga herumgeradelt. 

Es waren 32km auf flachen Straßen. Dabei habe ich viele Plantagen gesehen, und einen Lagunenstrand entdeckt. Ich hatte mir vorgenommen, morgen noch einmal separat dort zu den Lagunen hinzufahren (anstatt jetzt in Eile denn ich habe langsam Hunger und bin genug in der Sonne gewesen).

I indeed cycled around the entire island of Rarotonga. 

It was 32km circumnavigation with some stops at local plantages and I came past a beautiful lagoon beach. I decided to do that the next day to take my time instead of rushing it through today. I already felt a little hungry and had enough sun for today.

Abends war ordentlich was los: Internationales Krabbenrennen. Dies ist typisch für die Inseln und ich hatte dies bereits damals bei meiner Fidschi-Reise gesehen.

In the evening there was a big entertainment with the international crab race. This is a thing in the islands and I saw it first at my travel to Fiji in the past.

Welche Krabbe erreicht als erstes die Ziellinie? Which crab reaches the rope finish line first?

Abends war ich nochmal bei dem Strand direkt beim Hotel. Ich hatte ein paar Buckelwale vorbeiziehen sehen und saß da noch eine ganz Weile und schaute dem Meer zu bevor ich dann später von Kevin abgeholt wurde. Wir hatten vereinbart zusammen bei Kevin und Rachel was gemeinsam zum Abendessen zu kochen, denn alle von uns hatten noch genügend Essenssachen, die wir ja nicht einfach vernachlässigen wollen. Morgen ist der letzte volle Tag und die Dinner Show ist gebucht wo wir uns eingetragen hatten, um die Spezialität mitzuerleben.

In the evening I sat for a little while at the beach, a few seconds walking to watch the whales play and to enjoy the moment by the sea. Later, Kevin picked me up and us 3 had dinner at their place. Rachel cooked and we ate the remaining food items we had left, because tomorrow is the last full day here with dinner show where we'll dine in the restaurant for the booked table to experience the fire entertainment.

Freitag / Friday 5. September 2025

Morgens hatte ich mir etwas Zeit genommen und war nach dem Frühstück zum Strand runter gelaufen und bin dort geschwommen und geschnorchelt. Es war wie ein Aquarium mit bunten Fischen und ich hatte riesig große blaue Seesterne gesehen.

In the morning I took my time and went down the beach after breakfast. I swam a bit with snorkeling to see the variety of fish and even huge blue starfish, like being in an aquarium.

Anschließend hatte ich entschieden, mein frühes Mittagsessen im Hotelzimmer auf dem Balkon zu genießen, hatte dabei wieder die Buckelwale gesehen, die vorbeizogen, und später war ich zum Palmenhut erstellen heruntergegangen.

I had an early lunch in my room and sat on the balcony for a while, saw whales swimming past and later went down to the hat making.

Später war ich dann mal beim Hut herstellen, wollte mir das eigentlich nur ansehen, hatte mich aber dann doch dazugesetzt und es selbst ausprobiert. Erstmal wurden die Palmenblätter zugeschnitten und zusammengebunden, dann ging das Flechten los!

Later I went to the hat making activity. I wanted to watch this, but then decided to stay and try myself. At first the palm leaves were prepared and tied together, then braid them into a hat.

Schön geworden! Turned out nicely :)

Früher Nachmittag ~ Early Afternoon

Dann... runter zum Fahrrad welches ich bei der Hotelrezeption an die Seite gestellt hatte. Aber in der Zwischenzeit sind anscheinend neue Gäste angereist. 

Tja, und wo stellt man dann seine Kofferversammlung ab?

Then... I went to my bicycle that I had parked next to the hotel reception desk and out of the way. But in the meantime it seems that a group of new arrivals parked all their luggage collection here as well.

Am Hafen vorbei bin ich zum örtlichen Wochenmarkt gefahren. Ganze 10min mit Rad und dann war ich auch schon da. Wollte eigentlich Kevin und Rachel treffen, aber wir hatten schlechte Kommunikation und uns demnach leider verpasst.

Ich war dann jedenfalls allein da und hatte mich ausgiebig umgesehen, ein paar frühe Weihnachtsgeschenke gekauft und viele Eindrücke gewonnen von der Vielzahl an handgemachten hübschen Dingen.

Beside the Harbour was the local market. It was only a 10 min bikeride and I was there. I actually thought we all meet, Kevin and Rachel and I didn't catch each other as we had arranged. Still, poor communication led to the fact that I had a look by myself with plenty of time to buy early Christmas presents and to get a lot of new impressions with a variety of locally handmade items.

Ich fuhr weiter zum Lagunenstrand, dem Muri Beach, von dem ich gestern berichtete. Ich wollte das in Ruhe und ohne Beeilung machen, also hatte ich jetzt ja dafür richtig Zeit genommen - meine Schwimmsachen und Insta-Unterwasserkamera dabei. Los geht's und weiter mit dem brennenden Arsch!

I cycled to the lagoon beach - Muri Beach, which I already mentioned yesterday. I didn't feel like squeezing it in with rushing it, and took my time today. I explored the lagoon with the two little islands, together with my swim gear and the Insta Underwater-Camera. Off we go with the burning arse!

Unterhaltungsprogramm Abends im Restaurant

Abends war um 18:00 Uhr ein Unterhaltungsprogramm mit einer Feuershow unten im Restaurant beim Pool. Auf der Karte stand eine Auswahl an Insel-Spezialitäten im geflochtenen Palmen-Korbmenü und wir 3 (Kevin, Rachel und ich) hatten uns zusammen gesetzt, um uns das gemeinsam anzusehen, denn dies ist der letzte Abend zusammen, bevor wir dann alle morgen früh nach Aitutaki abreisen.

In the evening from 6pm, the hotel offered a dinner show with fire performance at their restaurant by the pool. On the menu was an island dinner presentation with local culinary experience presented in a braided palm basket. Us 3 - Kevin, Rachel and I met to enjoy this entertainment together as it's the last evening before we depart together to Aitutaki tomorrow morning.

Around 8pm the fire show began. The local children and youths have put a great entertainment together for their guests.

Um 21:00 Uhr war ein Rugbyspiel. Das neuseeländische Team ALL BLACKS spielte gegen die Südafrikanische Mannschaft Sprinkboks, und die meisten anwesenden Gäste mussten dieses Spiel ansehen. Mich interessierte das herzlich wenig, aber ich genoss mein eigen-kreiertes leckeres Nachtisch-Eis mit 2 Kugeln Vanilleeis und hatte dadrüber den Kurzen 69'er gekippt. Prost! Tor!

At 9pm, the favourite Rugby Game was on. The New Zealand Team ALL BLACKS played against the South Africa Team Springboks and the majority of the present guests were in excitement of the game. Not so much interest from my side, but I created my own special dessert with 2 vanilla ice cream scoops and tossed a shot glass of 69 over it. Delicious cheers!

Mit dem Shuttle Bus morgens abgeholt worden und zum Flughafen für Abflug 11.15 Uhr

My airport shuttle picked me up with plenty of time for the departure at 11.15 am to Aitutaki

Ich saß um 9:00 Uhr im Eingangsbereich und wartete auf meinen Airport Shuttle. Der war dann auch um 9:20 Uhr Island Time da! Und natürlich schnallt man sich als Fahrer hier nicht an (keine Pflicht)

At 9:00 am I was waiting in the Foyer for my Airport Shuttle to come and pick me up. This one arrived at 9.20 am island time. And of course drivers don't wear seat belts here, its not mandatory.

Angekommen am kleinen "Flughafen". Ich war pünktlich da, hatte mich noch etwas entspannt hingesetzt und wartete auf Kevin. Und während ich wartete unterhielt ich mich mit 2 berenteten Herrschaften die einiges an Reisegeschichten zu berichten hatten. Diese beiden Herren in ihren 80 Jahren hatte ich noch sehr viele Male immer wieder getroffen. Was für eine kleine Welt!

Arrival in time at the little airfield. I had plenty of time and sat back and relaxed, waited for Kevin to arrive. In the meantime I had a chat with 2 elderly gentlemen who shared interesting travel stories of their life. Both were around 80yo and met them many more times over and over again :) small world

Air Rarotonga ist eingetroffen, aber Kevin immer noch nicht. Der ist erst gegen 10 Uhr bei seiner Unterkunft abgeholt worden, verspätetes Taxi, Langsamkeit auf den Straßen aber der Flieger wartet nicht!!! Es war bereits 11 Uhr und das Einchecken mit Boarding war beendet. Ich versuchte das Flugpersonal davon zu überzeugen noch ein paar Minuten zu warten, denn Kevin fehlte noch und war nicht rechtzeitig eingetroffen. Es waren noch wenige Minuten die er mit dem Taxi entfernt war, aber das Flugpersonal hatte die Schotten dicht gemacht und wir flogen 11.10 Uhr zeitlich ab.... Mir war etwas unwohl geworden mit dem Gedanken, dass Kevin seinen Flug verpasst!!!!!

Air Rarotonga arrived, but Kevin is still not at the airport. He had booked his airport shuttle for 10am, I thought it'll be a little late tho for the distance away. It was 11am and no Kevin at the airport still, he was in the taxi that came a bit late and at slow pace to the airport didn't leave enough time to get the airport for the departure. The check-in with boarding concluded without Kevin who was only a couple of minutes away. I tried to convince the flight staff to give a few minutes wait for missing Kevin, but they were strict on the flight schedule and closed the doors in front of him; we left without him and it made me feel a little unwell knowing he's missed the flight!!!!

Ich wurde von einer Dame vom Paradise Cove begrüßt und nur etwa 10 Minuten Fahrt waren wir angekommen.

 I was greeted by a member of the Paradise Cove which was only 10 min drive away.

Hier ist mein schöner Beach Bungalow - mit nur wenigen Schritten entfernt ist man im Wasser.

This is my private beach bunglow with only a few steps away from the water.

Ich habe meine eigene Hängematte und Wäscheleine dabei.
I brought my own hammock and clothesline with me.

 

Das Früstück war ok. Einige Mitschwimmer haben darüber sehr negativ gesprochen, aber man muss sich bewusst sein das Lebensmittel hier teuer sind und eingebracht werden.

Hab zwar nicht alles gegessen, da ich mein eigenes Bircher-Müsli den Abend vorher vorbereitet hatte, aber Obst und Saft wurde verzehrt und die Milch gab's für meinen eigenen Kaffee. Die Cornflakes und ReisCrispies und Toastbrot wurden mit lustiger Stimmung und Spaß an die Hühner verfüttert. An ein paar Abenden hatte ich mein übrig gebliebenes Tablett mit Sachen am Abend statt ins Restaurant zu gehen, oder hatte mir Eier gekocht/gebraten.

The breakfast was ok. Some fellow swimmers did not speak good about it, but you have to consider that food items are expensive and not easy to come by and need to be imported. I didn't eat it all, because I preferred my own made Bircher Musli that I prepared the night before, but I had the fruit and juice + milk for my own coffee. The cornflakes and rice crispies and toast were fed to the chickens and roosters. I enjoyed this with entertainment and fun.

Some other nights I had some breakfast leftover for dinner or even cooked my own eggs.

Man muss ja nicht jedesmal Essen gehen.... 
No need to eat out every time...

Anschwimmen in der O'otu Lagune

Als kleine Gruppe da noch nicht alle angereist waren.

Abends waren wir alle gemeinsam mit 11 Personen im Boat House Restaurant, dort hatte ich mein leckeres einheimisches Gericht: Ika Mata nach Aitutaki Art mit Cassava Chips

Später als wir zurück im Paradise Cove waren kam der volle Blutmond im Schein der Nacht.

One Foot Island 🌴 Einfuß Insel

Morgens um 9:00 Uhr ging es mit dem Boot "Feuchte Träume" raus in die Lagune. 

Dort schwammen wir zum One-Foot-Island, die Insel die wie 1 Fuß aussieht. Dort bekommt man einen "Einreise-Stempel" oder in unserem Fall einen Einschwimm-Stempel wenn man dort an Land kommt.

In the morning at 9am we went on board of the "Wet Dreams" a boat operator took us out to the lagoon to swim to the One Foot Island. It looks like 1 foot and you can get an immigration stamp on arrival. In our case, we received a swimmigration stamp in the passport.

Can you believe that this distance is just under 3 km away??

Die erste Schwimmdistanz waren 2500m zur Insel. Später, nach der Mittagspause auf der Insel, sind wir nochmal ein Stück zurückgeschwommen, um die großen Trevally-Fische zu sehen.

The first swim distance was 2500m to the island. We had a lunch break there and later we swam another shorter distance to see some fish (Giant Trevally)

Ich hatte eine Meereschildkröte gesehen die vor mir aus dem Wasser auftauchte, schaute und schnell wieder davon schwamm. Ich war erstaunt darüber, wie schnell sie sein können. Viel zu schnell bis ich meine Kamera rausgeholt hatte...

I briefly saw a sea turtle in front of me peeking its head out of the water, looked and quickly swam away. I was quite surprised how fast they can swim! Too fast for my camera to capture them.

Da wir ja schwimmend "eingereist" sind, bekommen wir einen Stempel in den Pass, der wie ein Fußabdruck aussieht. Einfußinsel - One Foot Island hat sich nun in beide Reisepässe verewigt.

So, we successfully arrived swimming at the One Foot Island, so we'll get a stamp into our passport. The coolest I have received in both, the German and the New Zealand Passport.

Dann noch die einheimischen Hühner mit meiner misratenen Mittagsmahlzeit füttern. Die mögen diese viel zu scharfe Snackschale und gockeln drüber her.

Then I fed the local chickens with my lunch bowl, which was way too hot and spicy for me. At least they like it and have been cackling roostering over it.

Ich hatte mir von Neuseeland aus für jeden Tag ein kleines Mittagspaket zusammengestellt. Da die Lebensmittel auf den kleinen Cook Inseln in den Supermärkten sehr sehr teuer sind, war dies eine gute Idee mit einer kleinen Auswahl dabei.

I packed small lunch bags for each day. I brought these with me from New Zealand, as the groceries are very expensive on these islands. They all get their goods imported, means with exta high prices in the supermarkets.

Wir hatten uns alle kurz vor'm weiterschwimmen entschieden ein paar Yoga Posen zu machen, uns zu dehnen und Spass zu haben.

We all decided to do some yoga poses in the shallow water, to stretch and have fun before we continue our swim.

Gegen Abend hatten wir uns verabredet um mal ins Avatea Cafe zu gehen. Dort ist ein kleiner Laden mit eingebaut, den wir uns auch mal ansehen wollten und das Essen soll dort toll sein.

Around evening time we met to pay the Avatea Cafe a visit. They have a little local shop attached to it and the food was said to be nice.

Abends bot sich wieder ein super toller Sonnenuntergang von meinem Balkon.
And there was again a super nice sunset with views from my balcony.

Gegen 21:00 / 21:30 Uhr war ich platt... Around 9pm / 9:30 pm I got knackered and off to bed.

Honeymoon Island (1)

Wir sind heute eine lange Distanz geschwommen. We swam the longest distance today.

Glassklares Wasser - Crystal clear water

Wenn du diese dunklen Stellen von der Entfernung wahnimmst sieht das nach nichts aus. Aber sobald du nahe dran schwimmst, ist das ein Riff. Hier kannst du zum Teil nicht drüberschwimmen, sondern musst drumrum, sonst ist es möglich Schnittwunden von den Korallen zu bekommen.

When you see these darker patches from the distance they look like nothing. But, as soon as you come close, you'll not be able to swim over the reef without coral cut. In most cases I had to keep sight of them to swim around to avoid wounds.

Nach einer kurzen Verschnaufpause im Schatten war eine Mittagspause angesagt.

After a short break with lunch and snacks, we swam on further.

 Ich bin nicht wirklich immer begeistert mit dem jeden Abend Essen gehen... Heute Abend hatte ich mir Eier gebraten und auf den noch vorhandenen Toastscheiben vom morgen mit Schinken und einheimischer Gurke für $5.

I am not a big fan of dining out every night, so I fried some eggs, on my breakfast toast from the morning, with ham and local cucumber from the market for $5.

Honeymoon Island (2)

Morgens ging es wieder zur gewohnten Uhrzeit 9:00 Uhr los. Wir waren schnorcheln.

In the morning at the usual 9am time we went out to go snorkeling.

Ein Paradies, zum Teil klare Sicht, dann erscheinen Korallen mit bunten tropischen Fischen!

What a paradise. There seems to be nothing near and far, then suddenly some corals with colorful tropical fish.

Na sowas!!! Wer stellt denn die Einrichtung SOO auf ?! Das ist mir ein Augenschmerz. Oder bin nur ich das, die sich denkt, warum ist der kleine Wärmeschrank auf dem großen Tresen, und der große Kasten auf dem kleinen Ecktisch.... 
Das musste ich einfach teilen. Könnte ich nicht ertragen wenn ich hier arbeiten sollte hahaha

What is this arrangement here? Who is setting it up like THIS? It's a pain for my eyes, or is it just me? Thinking why is the small display unit on the largest bench and the large warming cabinet placed on the small table and that only partially?? Odd and just had to share. I could not work here with this set up haha

Dann leider gegen Abend hatte ich einen unerklärlichen juckenden und schmerzenden Hautauschlag bekommen.. einfach so. Hitzepickel? Sonnenreaktion?

Then suddenly in the evening I developed a very itchy and painful skin irritation. Just like that. Wondering if its heat rash? Reaction to the sun?

😯Was draufgeschmiert und ging dann wieder. Applied some creme, be ok.

Einige wollten Abends zur Blauen Lagune und dort was im Restaurant essen gehen.. Schon wieder? Ich hatte bereits vorher etwas in die Speisekarte geschaut, aber es gab kein Ika Mata und alles andere war mega überteuert und es hatte keinen lohnenswerten Schmaus für mich. Es war bereits Mittwoch und ich hatte noch einiges an eigenen Lebensmitteln da. Außerdem war ich bereits etwas hungrig nachdem wir vom Schwimmen zurückkamen, also hatte ich auf meinem Balkon bereits vorher schon gegessen, und zwar was noch da war (noch verbleibende Sachen vom Frühstückstablett). Jedenfalls bin ich abends mit den anderen dennoch kurz mitgegangen und es war eine tolle Erfahrung den Fischen zuzusehen wie sie in den Sonnenuntergang springen.

Some had a table reservation at the Blue Lagoon Restaurant for dinner. I already felt hungry after the swim and still had quite a few food items left. So I decided to skip the restaurant food at sky rocket prices, AND they did not have Ika Mata on the menu; everything else was quite overpriced and did not appeal to me. So I passed, as I enjoyed some home meals from the balcony earlier (leftovers from the breakfast tray). However, I came out and joined the others. It was fun to watch the fish jump during sunset.

Lagoon swimming and snorkeling between the Islands

An manchen Stellen waren Korallenriffe mit scharfen Kanten dort nahe der Wasseroberfläche angesiedelt, wo dort stellenweise das Wasser nicht sehr tief war. Wenn du dir hier eine Schnittverletzung zufügst, ist das nicht lustig. Manche Korallen haben Bakterien, welche bei Schnitten in die Wunde eindringen und das Gewebe angreifen. Wenn dies unbehandelt bleibt, kann es zu ersthaften Schäden kommen, in schweren Fällen zu Langzeitfolgen ähnlich wie dem allbekannten Krankenhauskeim.

In some parts, the corals were quite close to the water surface and partially in not very deep water. You don't want to swim over them with the risk of getting a skin cut. If you receive a cutting wound and don't treat it properly, it can cause damage to the skin tissue from the corals that carry bacteria in them and that can cause long-term damage, even severe issues similar to the well-known hospital germs.

Mittwoch nach dem Schwimmen hatte ich eine Yoga Stunde mit Jo. Sie ist selbstständige Yoga Lehrerin von unserer Gruppe und hatte während der Zeit hier mit den anderen ihre Yogazeit um 6:00 Uhr morgens oben auf einem Berggipfel. Da ich aber zu der Zeit null Lust dazu habe, so früh und im Dunkeln schon den Berg hochzukraxeln, bin ich gerne bereit, wenn wir mehr Zeit haben, und nach dem Schwimmen erscheint mir sinnvoller, Dehnübungen zu machen.

Wednesday after the swim, I had a Yoga session with Jo. She is a freelance Yoga teacher and took our group for 6am up the summit. But I am not the slightest interested in a climbing ascent in darkness but keen in the afternoon with some stretches post-swim which seems more logic to me.

Mein Standbungalow hatte eine Induktions-Kochplatte. Sogar Töpfe und Pfannen. Das nützt aber alles nichts, wenn der Kochtopf von der Platte nicht anerkannt wird (nicht kompatibel). Tja, was macht man da? Flexibel sein.... da ich ja bereits Eier gebraten hatte, wurde wieder die Pfanne rausgeholt und meine Eier dann eben darin gekocht.

My beach bungalow had an induction stovetop. I even had pots and pan, but that doesn't mean much if the induction top doesn't recognise the pot as it wasn't compatible. Well, what to do in this case... use the bloody pan Hahahah, I know it's working as I already fried eggs in them. Now I'm boiling eggs in the pan. Flexibility is the key!

Abends hatte ich dann noch ein paar übrige Dinge von meinem Frühstückstablett. Ich hatte das gesamte Ding so morgens in den Kühlschrank gestellt und das gab es dann als Abendessen mit kleinen Mini-Pfannkuchen, Obst und Toast (meine gekochten Eier dazu). Mir war nicht nach Restaurantbesuch oder Auswärtsessen.

In the evening, I had for dinner the remains of my breakfast tray. I put the entire thing in the fridge and pulled it out for dinner. There were some mini pancakes, fruit pieces and toast slices (with my eggs)

Good enough for dinner, I don't feel like a restaurant visit or Takeaway.

Wale - Whales

Der letzte volle Tag. Mit den Walen Schwimmen!

The last full day and we're out to swim with the whales!

Morgens hatte ich meinen Kaffee, Wasser und eigene kleine Joghurt-Müsli Schale vor dem Schwimmen.

Wir wissen ja, wer Boot fährt kann auch mal etwas 🤮werden. Aber dieses Mal hatte ich Seekrankpillen dabei.

In the morning I had my daily homemade yoghurt Bircher Musli bowl. A very small feed before swimming. You know, boat rides can make you 🤮But this time I had sea sickness pills with me.

Während ich da so schön mein Frühstück am Morgen genossen hatte, hin und her gelaufen bin um meine Schwimmsachen zu packen, schaute doch tatsächlich ein Buckelwal aus dem Wasser!
Ich hatte die täglich immer mal wieder vorbeiziehen sehen, aber grade heute ein so tolles Bild wo wir schwimmen mit den Walen auf dem Plan haben.

While I sat on the balcony for my breakfast, and also walked back and forth to pack my swim gear, came a whale past and stuck its head out of the water!

I saw them daily when they swam past, but this is a great photo on the day out to swim with them.

Also wie üblich, gegen 8.30 Uhr los und um 9.00 Uhr ins Boot steigen mit der großen Hoffnung diesesmal die Wale von näher dran zu sehen.

Wir sind ungefähr 45min auf dem Wasser gewesen, da sahen wir eine Fontäne die von einem Wal hochgeblasen wurde. Wir fuhren schnell in die Richtung, aber es waren noch 100m Entfernung und die waren weg als wir uns annäherten. Also weiter. Alle waren startklar mit Schwimmsachen, Flossen usw um direkt ins Wasser zu gehen sollten wir noch mehr sehen. Nach kurzer Zeit sahen wir dann weitere Wale und gingen ins Wasser. Ich war so begeistert und in Vorfreude das ich direkt als erste startklar da sass und ins Wasser stieg. Ich habe allerdings NULL Ahnung warum die anderen Schwimmer im flachen Schnorchelriff herumgeeiert sind während ich ins tiefe blaue offene Meer schwamm. Meiner Meinung nach findet man Wale im tiefen Wasser und nicht dort wo die Mehrheit war... Lass sie!

Ich hatte dann urplötzlich das Gefühl mich umdrehen zu müssen und hinter mir war ein Buckelwal. OH WOW! Hello! Ich war total überwältigt von der Größe des Tieres, was um mich herumschwamm und dann abtauchte. Das war riesig (dachte ich), aber dann auf einmal kamen 2 weitere Buckelwale vor mir auf die 3x die Größe hatten!!! OHHHH WOOOW das ist ja unglaublich. Die Eltern des kleinen Jugendlichen waren gekommen. Es schien mir so als ob das kleinere kam und neugierig war, mich anschaute und inspizierte :) Was für ein magischer Moment das war. Andere Schwimmer hatten diesen kurzen Augenblick mit den Walen verpasst (wer im flachen Riff schwimmt...)

As usual, 8.30 leaving for 9am on the boat with the huge hope to see the whales from close up this time.

After about 45min boat ride, everyone had their swim gear on, caps, goggles, fins whatever you wear (and I am pretty sure I was first ready to go if we saw one whale near the boat)
We indeed spotted the first blow 100m away but by the time we got there - gone. They swam away.
We carried on and followed the reef line in the deep water.

Suddenly some more whales came up and we slowly got into the water. We swam for a bit and I have no idea why everyone swam in the damn shallow snorkel reef while I decided to swim in the deep blue water where whales would be if so... logic, right?

After a few minutes, I had a strange feeling that I should turn around and WOOOOW there was a whale behind me!! HUGE one (I thought) it swam around and dove further down. THEN... 2 even way larger whales came up and I saw them clearly in front of me, about 3x the size of the little juvenile I saw! It was a magical moment, unreal and I was so happy to see them. Very happy that I just absorbed it and been in the moment, pointed the underwater camera to them, but did not pay attention to the equipment, I wanted to enjoy the whales in real while they were there. I did not miss a single second of this amazing experience. Glad I swam in the deep water. Others who were mucking around in the shallows missed them.

Ich war eher fokussiert auf den Moment die Wale selbst zu sehen, als mich mit der Kamera zu beschäftigen. Leider kommt es nicht gut durch wie toll der wirkliche Augenblick war.

I was focused on actually watching and enjoying the whales while they were there and not to muck around with the camera. Unfortunately, the video does not justice the moment in time.

Ich hatte dazu noch Meereschildkröten gesehen. Es überraschte mich, wie super schnell die einfach wegschwimmen können (wenn sie denn gestört werden). Die machen nur mal eben 3-4 Schwimmbewegungen mit ihren vorderen Beinchen und weg sind sie. Ich bin ganz ruhig auf der Stelle geblieben und hatte sie angesehen wie anmütig sie gelassen 1.50 Meter unter mir schwammen. Nur ich hatte diese gesehen.. und auf der Kamera festgehalten dieses Mal.

I also saw sea turtles. I was quite surprised about the fact, how fast they can swim away (if they feel disturbed or scared). They only do 3-4 swim movements with their front feet and then they're gone! When I spotted them swimming underneath me, I stayed calm and without movement to capture them on the underwater cam this time. I enjoyed seeing them so close. I think it might have been 1.50m away and only I saw them.

Super glücklich und zufrieden kamen wir mit dem Boot wieder im kleinen Hafen an. Großes Happyface :) 

Da wir noch etwas Zeit hatten, waren wir bei einem örtlichen kleinen Markt, den Stonefish Studios (Kleidung), und bei einem ungewöhnlichen Baum, der wie ein Spalier-Tor gewachsen ist.

I was suuper happy as we arrived back in the small harbour. I'm sure I had a big smile in my face.

We had a bit of time and checked out the local market, the Stonefish Studios (clothing), and stopped at an unusual tree that formed like a gate/arch and grew like that naturally.

Mit unseren 2 Leihautos fuhren wir zum Banyan Baum in Arutanga bei der kleinen Gemeinde Vipae, der einen majestätischen Tunnel geformt hat

With our 2 rental cars we drove to the Banyan Tree in Arutanga and formed a tunnel near the village of Vipae

Rachel und ich sind noch etwas querfeldein gefahren um mehr von der Insel zu sehen und so sieht die Straße hier aus... sind wir hier richtig hahah

Rachel and I went for a little island-road trip and wanted to see the other half of it, but wondered if this was the right way? Apparently so... LOL

Eine Plantage - oben sind die einheimischen "Kartoffelartigen Knollengemüse" wie Cassava, Taro, Maniok und Kumaras (Süßkartoffel). Unten sind Bananenbäume.

Diese einheimischen (exotischen/tropischen) Gemüsesorten werden hier angeboten als tägliche Hauptbeilagen: Kumara, Taro, Cassava (Manioc, Tapioca, Yuca) und so sehen sie aus:

Wir kennen alle die heimische Kartoffel (Potato) und die Süßkartoffel (Kumara) in verschiedenen Sorten. Unten sind Cassava und Taro, die auf den Cook Inseln ein großer Bestandteil der täglichen Mahlzeiten sind.

We are all familiar with the varieties of potatoes incl. sweet potatoes called kumara. Below are pictures of what cassava and taro look like. Quite starchy in taste they are a daily main food source.

Cassava und Taro sind kaum von einander zu unterscheiden. Beide sehr stärkehaltig, mehlig im Geschmack. Nur das eine lang ist und die andere rund. Taro kann gekocht dunkelblau sein.

Cassava and taro are not easy to tell apart. Both are quite starchy in taste. One is long, the other round and are quite alike. Taro turns dark blue when cooked.

Und hier hatte ich noch was interessantes entdeckt, was ich bislang noch nicht gesehen hatte (aber bereits gegessen in Rarotonga bei der Feuerschau)

Als Erinnerung: Die grüne Beilage ist wie Spinat, aber aus Taroblättern hergestellt, und das gab es bei der Freitagabend-Dinner-Show im Edgewater Hotel/Rarotonga unten im Korbmenü.
Daneben ist eine Taro, oben links eine kleine Portion Kartoffelsalat, in der Mitte roher Fisch (Ika Mata), 1 Hühnerbein und 1 Stück Bauchspeck gebraten, mit einer Salatbeilage und einer Trink-Kokosnus.

Reminder: The green side in the white bowl is rukau (like spinach). It tastes very much like it and is on the plate next to taro, local raw fish (Ika Mata), small potato salad, 1 chicken leg and 1 piece pork belly, and a small side salad with a drinking coconut.

Es war in Tava'u im Sonnenuntergang und ich habe einen Wal nach dem anderen gesehen. Was für ein schöner Abschied von der Insel Aitutaki.

We arrived at the accommodation and had our last dinner together with everyone. While the sunset offered its beauty, one whale after the other swam by and gave a memorable farewell from Aitutaki.

Und hier hatte ich mein Ika Mata wieder - mmmmmm lecker! Dieses war das beste!

And I had my favourite Ika Mata again - yummy! This last one was the best!

Letzter Tag - Rückreise

Der Urlaub geht zu Ende, während andere mit ihren frischen Blumenkränzen begrüßt wurden, war die Zeit für uns gekommen, wieder in die Realität zu reisen.

The holiday comes to an end. While new arrivals were greeted with their fresh flowers, it was time for us to get back to reality.

Then Rachel and I sat in the small plane with a short flight back to Rarotonga. Kevin arrived a little later.

Angekommen in Rarotonga nach nur 45 Minuten Flugzeit, wurden wir herzlich vom Flughafen Musikanten empfangen. Er singt für alle Reisenden und spielt auf seiner Gitarre und diesen Moment hatte ich kurz auf Video festgehalten - Ton anstellen

Wir hatten etwa 3 Stunden Zeit bis zum Anschlussflug nach Auckland. Unser Gepäck hatten wir in den Schließfächern zwischenzeitlich weggesperrt und dann noch etwas in Zeit in Rarotonga/Avatua verbracht. Da waren ein paar kleine Läden in kurzer Fußmarsch Entfernung. Wir nutzten die Zeit und hatten bereits ein paar Weihnachtsgeschenke gefunden.

We had about 3 hours until the connecting flight to Auckland. Our luggage was temporarily parked up in the airport lockers so we could take a little look around the small local shops and buy some Christmas presents.

Noch ein kurzer Stop bei einem Cafē mit einem Schwimmbad mitten in dem Lokal. Wir hatten Blick aufs Meer und tranken Milchshakes. Massage zum super günstigen Preis - ok da sind wir dabei!

Just a short stop at a cafe and look at this! A pool in the middle of the place. We had views to the sea and a milkshake. Massage to a discounted special price afterwards - ok why not

Das Wetter verzieht sich etwas, es ist sehr windig. The weather changes and the wind picked up.

Rarotonga ist eine Vulkaninsel und die größte der Cook Inseln, die aus 15 Inseln besteht und mitten im Südpazifik / Polynesien liegt. Die Währung ist Neuseeland Dollar und die Cook Inseln gehören politisch zu Neuseeland. Die einheimische Sprache is Cook Insel Maori und Englisch.

Sieh mal an, Aitutaki hat ungefähr die Größe von Sellstedt und der Pennhop mit seinen 9 Häusern ist dann vielleicht die Insel Palmerston. Und Rarotonga ist dann im Vergleich wie Schiffdorf?

Zurück in die Zukunft, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes, fliegen wir heute (Freitag 14:00 Uhr los und sind nach etwa 4 Stunden am morgigen Tag, also Samstagabend da). Diese Zeitzonen sind verwirrend.

Back to the Future, literally. We fly today (Friday 2pm and after 4 hours we land tomorrow, Saturday evening in Auckland) These time zones play tricks on us.

Angekommen in Auckland war es sehr windig und stürmisch. Aber mein Vögelchen hat sich sehr gefreut mich wieder zu haben.

Arrival back in Auckland to gusts and very windy conditions. But my birdy was very happy to see me again.

Zurück im normalen Leben. Was für eine Umstellung denn jetzt muss ich mir mein Frühstück wieder selber machen. Mir wird kein Tablett an den Strandbungalow gebracht.

Back in the normal life. What a change and I have to get my own breakfast now, no more morning tray delivered to by chalet.

Aber es ist so schön meine Papageien wieder um mich zu haben. Die hatte ich doch vermisst. Genau wie mein Pferd!

But its nice to have my parrots around me again. I missed them and my horse of course.

IKA MATA Rezept

Zutaten:  250g frisches Thunfisch Filet, in kleine Würfel schneiden

                4 Limetten, frisch gepresst

                300ml Kokusnusmilch

                1 kleine rote Paprika, Samen entfernt und in kleine Stücke schneiden

                1/2 Gurke, geschält, Samen entfernt und in kleine Stücke schneiden
                1 rote Zwiebel, in dünne Streifen schneiden

                1 Teelöffel Salz

Rohen Thunfisch in eine Schale geben und mit dem Saft der 4 Limetten vermischen. Abdecken und für 1 Stunde im Kühlschrank marinieren.

Währenddessen Gurke, Zwiebel und Paprika im Kühlschrank lagern.

Kokusnusmilch mit Thunfisch & Limettensaft vermischen.

Gurke, Zwiebel und Paprika hinzugeben.
Nach Geschmack salzen und gut mischen.
Frisch servieren!
