Whakatipu Legend - Winter Lake Swim im Skigebiet Queenstown

Am Wochenende vom 4.-6. Juli war ich im Skigebiet Queenstown auf der Südinsel in winterlichen Wetterbedingungen - perfekt zum schwimmen. 

The weekend 4-6th July I went to Queenstown on the South Island where the ski season is open and the snow shows with wintery conditions - perfect for swimming.

Erstmal ankommen, meine Eisschwimm-Freunde treffen und zusammen kurz vor Sonnenuntergang noch schnell kalt schwimmen gehen. Ich wurde beim Flughafen von meiner Mitschwimmerin abgeholt und wir waren zum Bootsanleger gefahren, trafen uns dort mit den anderen und schwammen eine kurze Distanz von 400m -1000m. Anschliessend gingen wir gemeinsam gegenüber vom Schwimmplatz in die örtliche Brauerei um dort warme Getränke und was zum Abendessen zu geniessen.

Firstly, I arrived and was picked up from the airport by my swim friend, and we drove to the Frankton marina, where we met the others for a short cold swim of about 400m to 1000m. Afterwards, we went to the local Altitude Brewery for dinner together. It was only a very short walk across from the swim spot and we enjoyed warm drinks and dinners.

Oh mann, mir war kalt geworden, so auch wir alle und mussten uns bei der nahegelegenen Brauerei under die Heizpilze setzen. Ich hatte einen warmen Glühwein und sofort alle Lichter an.. wartete auf mein bestelltes Essen (leckeres Fladenbrot mit Hühnchenfüllung)

Oh man, I felt so cold -all of us- and we ordered some warm drinks afterwards. I had a mulled wine and immediately got "all my lights on" while I was waiting for my ordered dinner. It was a flat bread with pulled chicken filling. Delicious :)

Und da ist ja schon mein Essen, Ich hatte echt Hunger nach nur Frühstück den ganzen Tag über mit Flugverspätung und dem kalten Schwimmen. Wohl verdient! Prost... Hick... 

And there it is, my awaited dinner meal. I was so hungry after I had only had breakfast that day, a delayed flight and a cold swim. Deserved! Cheers, hiccup...

Ich war bei der Aspen Lodge in einem Einzelzimmer untergekommen. Dies war bequem, zentral gelegen und die bislang sauberste Hostel-Lodge in der ich übernachtet hatte. Was gibt man für ungestörtes Schlafen! Mein Badezimmer war direkt neben meinem Raum.

My accommodation was at the Aspen Lodge; this was a comfy private room in the cleanest hostel I have ever stayed in. What do I give for having a peaceful enjoyable quality sleep. My bathroom was directly next to my bedroom.

Nun aber zur Schwimmveranstaltung am Samstag morgen. Erst aber ging es vorher noch zum Handwerks- und Kunstmarkt, von dem ich euch berichten möchte. Kevin rief mich gegen kurz nach acht morgens an ob ich wach bin und mit will. Klar! Rein in die Klamotten und los! Gute Gelegenheit und so kann ich euch noch mehr hier im Blog zeigen was ihr vielleicht auch interessant findet.

Now, getting to the swim event on Saturday morning. But firstly, I will tell you about the arts and craft market I went to. Kevin called me after 8am in the morning and asked if I was awake and wanted to come too. Jup! Into the clothes I went and off. A good opportunity to talk here about something that interests you as well as things other than swimming.

Da ich ja direkt nach dem Markt zur Schwimmveranstaltung rüberlaufe, hatte ich meine Wärmflasche (das flauschige Wärmekrokodil) und den Pfefferminztee in der Thermosflasche schon vorbereitet.
After the visit to the market, I would walk directly from there to the swim event site which is pretty much next to it. I also prepared my hot water bottle -the soft crocodile and tea flask in the morning.

Dann lief ich mal langsam zur Schwimmveranstaltung rüber, denn gegen 10 Uhr wollten wir dort die anderen treffen - die waren bereits da :)

Then I made myself on the way to the swim event site. We wanted to meet the others around 10 am and they were already there :)

Ich hatte mich also eingetragen um an dem Winter-Schwimm-Wettbewerb hier im See Whakatipu teilzunehmen, dem beliebten Skigebiet von Queenstown.

Diesmal hatte ich mich entschieden die lange 1000 Meter Distanz zu schwimmen. Letztes Jahr waren es 500m.

I registered for the winter swim race held at Lake Whakatipu, near the popular ski area of Queenstown. 

This time, I decided to register for the bone chilling 1000 m swim distance. Last year I finished 500m.

Erstaunlich viele sind trotz winterlichen Temperaturen in nur Badesachen geschwommen. Die Mehrheit hatte aber den Neoprenanzug dabei. Insgesamt waren 46 Schwimmer am Start.

It's surprising to see how many swimmers were in togs only despite wintery conditions. The majority of swimmers however swam in wetsuit. A total of 46 swimmers were registered.

Der Schwimmkurs ging zu den beiden roten Bojen links hinten am Ende der Klippen, links herum und um die rote Boje die grade so eben noch im Bild links halb zu erkennen ist - und dann noch eine zweite Runde damit ich die 1000m vollende bei 8C Wassertemperatur. Bethany (vorne im Bild auf dem Stand-up-Paddlebord) ist als Wassersicherheit und mentale Unterstützung dabei)

The swim course is out to the left around the two red buoys, then back to shore around the red buoy which is so just visible in the photo on the left and repeat for a second round to complete the 1000m at 8C water temperature. Bethany (in the front on her stand-up-paddle board) is supporting with the safety on the water and provides mental support - which I indeed needed on the last leg of the swim.

Anschliessend war die Siegerehrung und ich hatte sogar eine Preistüte gewonnen. Darin waren 6x Bierdosen mit dem örtlichen Bier Sled Dog von der lokalen Altitude Brauerei wo wir den Abend vorher essen waren. Sehr lecker!

Afterwards was the prize giving and I even won a spot prize with a paper bag of 6 beer cans from the local Altitude Brewery. Sled Dog is an IPA and can only be purchase here. Very yummy liquid!  

Dann musste es erstmal was zum Mittagessen geben, denn ich war sehr hungrig nach dem Schwimmen. Seit ich mir Queenstown gebucht hatte freute ich mich auf diesen besonderen Fergburger. Kevin und ich sind zum Fergburger gelaufen, denn den musste ich mir erst verdienen. Sagte mir: "Keinen Fergburger unter 1000m schwimmen". Aber das hatte ich ja nun vollendet und während wir warteten gab es einen Glühwein und einen Kaffee. Prost Kevin!

I needed something to eat. I was starving after the 1000m swim and wanted a Fergburger (the craving plan associated with the Queenstown trip). But I had to deserve it first and told myself: "Can't have a Fergburger under 1000m swim" but I have completed this distance this morning and we walked down a few minutes. While we were waiting, we had a mulled wine and a coffee. Cheers Kevin!

Anschliessend war ich schlatt-voll und hatte mich in der Hostel-Lounge breit gemacht, meinen FergBretzel gegessen, ein gewonnenes Preis-Bier getrunken und mir was auf YouTube angesehen. Es waren mittlerweile 2.5 Stunden vergangen nachdem ich mein Schwimmen hatte und erst jetzt waren meine Füße wieder langsam aufgewärmt. Endlich.

Afterwards, I was flat out, food coma set in after a FergPretzel, a prize beer and I stretched out in the hostel lounge and watched a show on YouTube. It was 2.5 hours past the swim and my feet slowly warmed up. Finally.

Das Ausruhen und relaxen war genau richtig, denn nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit hatte ich Eintrittskarten zum LUMA Lichter-Festival. Darin enthalten war ein Vogelparkbesuch. Dort konnte man die nachtaktiven Kiwivögel beobachten under Park hatte im Dunklen noch ein besonderes Flair.

The little chillout time was just right to replenish energy for the LUMA Festival of Lights tonight. I had tickets and included was a visit to the kiwi bird park. Here you can observe the nocturnal flightless birds at night and the park has it's special flair after dark.

Dann hieß es Hereinspaziert in den verwünschten, magischen "Zauberwald" wie in einem Märchen, denn das Thema war "Enchanted" was so viel bedeutet "verzaubert" und war sehr schön zusammengestellt und führte durch den gesamten Kiwi Vogelpark.

Then it was time to enter the magical world of the LUMA Enchanted - this was the theme of the even this year. The light shows were well put together and led all around the Kiwi Bird Park transforming into a magic enchanted forest atmosphere of a fairy tale.

Ein gigantisches Moa-Ei mit einem gigantischen Moa (ein flugloser giraffengroßer Vogel), ähnlich dem Kiwivogel, allerdings hier in Neuseeland lange ausgestorben.

Dann hatten wir eine reservierte Zeit um in das Kiwi-Vogel Gehege zu gehen. Dort kann man die nachtaktiven Tiere ganz leise in ihrer natürlichen Umgebung direkt erleben. Keine Lichter oder Fotografie erlaubt, es ist störend.

Then we had a reserved entry time to the Kiwi bird encounter after dark where we could see and observe the nocturnal animals quietly at night in their natural habitat. No photos or lights here, it's disturbing.

Hier gab es sogar ein paar Erfrischungen angeboten, allerdings zu Höchstpreisen. Eine Pommes waren $8 (4€) und eine Tasse Heiße Schokolade ging für stolze $14 (7€) über den Ladentisch!

Here you could take a break and get some refreshments, but at extraordinary prices. A portion of fries was sold for $8 and a mug of hot chocolate went for $14 over the counter!

Es war ein schöner Parkrundgang im Abendlicht und eine sehr tolle Show zusammengestellt. Zum Essen und Trinken war ich ja auch nicht da, denn ich hatte bereits vorher in der Lodge was gegessen. Es wunderte mich allerdings nicht, dass die Verzehrpreise für das "gefangene Publikum" so hoch sind...

It was a very nice park tour in the evening after dark, and overall a well-put-together entertainment without large crowds. I wasn't there to eat and drink, and I already had dinner at the lodge just before I went out, so nothing wrong with the captive audience prices. People pay it, so be it.

Am nächsten Morgen ging es dann wieder in Richtung Auckland mit einem Rückflug am späten Morgen. Ich konnte mir somit etwas Zeit lassen und das Wetter war gut und alles lief nach Plan. Ich hatte noch meinen Restbretzel vom Vortag. Den hatte ich als Frühstück mit einem Cappuccino beim Flughafen während ich aufs Boarding wartete.

The following morning was the departure day. I left to the Airport for a late morning return flight. The weather was nice and everything went to plan. I still had a pretzel from yesterday, this was my breakfast together with an espresso at the airport while I was waiting for boarding.
