Rakino island Insel hike and swim

Waitangi Day 6.2.2024

The Waitangi Day (Māori: Te Rā o Waitangi), the national day of New Zealand, marks the anniversary of the initial signing on 6 February 1840 of the Treaty of Waitangi. This Treaty of Waitangi was an agreement towards British sovereignty by representatives of the Crown and indigenous Māori chiefs, and so is regarded by many as the founding document of the nation.

🌄

This public holiday was a great day out with the swim group: Off to Rakino Island. And to ensure I am able to find my car in the massive Downtown Carpark, there's always a little photo story and evidence of where I parked.

So you get an ideal where the island is located and what the size of this small retreat looks like.

Population21 Einwohner

After arrival on the island we had to trudge along for 2.4 km to reach the bay. But I think there's nothing to compain about - just see it as a good opportunity for another training to get fit for my upcoming hike.

How odd to see these partially completely overgrown trailers and broken vehicles along the way.

Das Wasser rückt näher! The water is getting closer!

But.. only half on the distance covered so far!

I was quite surprised to see sooo many boats in this bay!

🏊🏊🏊

2.7 km weaving through all the boats in the Woody Bay. Every few metres were boats, yachts and anchor chains to watch out for. We passed through 2 Rock bowlers and a small grove, had to walk over large pebble stones until we saw a carpet of oyster shells! OOOH NO you don't want to try walking over razor sharp edges and cut your feet! I decided to carefully glide over them and take care. I only discovered 2-3 little cuts on my hands.

Pizza Time! 🍕🍕🍕

Most of the swimmers ordered their pizzas (I did too, but there were some complications with the ordering process, and in the end, I decided that I didn't really feel hungry enough for one myself). Instead, I swapped a coffee and some snacks for 2 pizza slices as I had my gas stove with a collapsible kettle with me. I made coffee and tea and shared my snacks with fellow swimmers. Deal.

In front of the Woody Bay Pizza Place - the only food you can get here on the island - no other shops.

The pizza guy on full drive, probably making the profit of the month with us today!

Rückweg zur Fähre - Back to the ferry

Mittlerweile war der Wasserspiegel angestiegen!
Meanwhile, the water level rose to knee height!

Back at the Ferry ramp - Wieder bei der kleinen Fährenrampe

links ist ein Rochen im flachen Wasser - on the left a ray in the flat clear water

A last view before departure.

A few children kept themselves busy during the waiting time for the ferry...

Afterwards at home: An icebath and a nice grilled steak
