Winterliche Grüße von der Südinsel Queenstown und umzu

Die Südinsel Neuseelands ist im Winter kühler und kann -im Gegensatz zu Auckland- winterlich werden. Die Südinsel hat Schnee, Ski-Gebiete und in den Fjordland Gegenden sieht man sogar schneebedeckte Berge, was wir hier im Norden nur im Mt Ruapehu Gebiet haben (sog, Mordor) was im zentralen Bereich der Nordinsel liegt.

Meine Sonntags-Schwimmgruppe bietet eine geführte Gruppentour an, wo wir gemeinsam mit einer kleinen, überschaulichen Anzahl Schwimmern die sogenannte "Kalte Tour" unternehmen, wo wir die südlichen Seen schwimmen werden. Diese sind bei etwa 4-8 Grad Celsius doch recht kühler als die Auckland-Temperaturen. Ich freue mich schon!

The South Island in winter is much colder and has in comparison to Auckland a real winter feel to it. It has snow, ski fields and in the fiord land areas you can spot snow covered mountain peaks, what you wont find in the North Island, except the Mt Ruapehu (known as Mordor) and is located in the centre of the North lsland.

My Sunday swim group offers a guided "cold tour" with a small number of swimmers in a group where we will swim in the southern lakes. These are at around 4-8 degrees celsius and therefore much colder than I am used to here in the "warmer" Auckland sea. I am excited and looking forward to it!

This was the 2020 first Cold Tour without me obviously - unten war die erste "Kalte Tour" ohne mich offensichtlich denn damals war ich noch nicht soweit

1500 km entfernt liegt Queenstown, dort geht es zur "Kalten Schwimmtour" Anfang September hin!

A bit eggagarating may be allowed: Only about 1500 km away is Queenstown. I am ready for early September The Cold Tour!

Erster Schwimmversuch im kalten Wasser.. Test Swim at Queenstown City Waterfront

I feel so overdressed... I komm mir vor wie ne Wurst in der Pelle!

ordentlich verpackt.. am Ende sind wir dann in Badeanzug gegangen und schon nach kurzer Zeit an die kaelteren Temperaturen gewoehnt.
Layerd up in a decent way - which changes just after a short time when we got used to the colder temperatures fairly quickly

gar nicht so schlimm, aber schwimmen im See ist doch entscheidend anders als im salzigen Meer
not too bad, but swimming in cold lakes is quite different to swimming in the salty sea

Das Gesicht brennt vom kalten Wasser. The face is burning from the cold water.

Make sure we keep warm afterwards - wrapped up and from the inside with mulled wine.
Anschliessend gut warm anziehen - und dann von innen ebenfalls aufwaermen mit Gluehwein.

Lake Moke See
Der See liegt hoeher in den Bergen und ist damit der kaelteste See in unserer Schwimmtour.
This lake is the furthest up in the alpines and therefore the coldest location in our swim tour.

Erstmal diese schoene Gegend erkunden und bestaunen. Firstly, explore and enjoy this beautiful area

As the water is expected to be around 4 max 5 degrees temperature, our paramedic Diane is ready to guide and support us. Da das Wasser hier um die 4 bis max. 5 Grad ist, haben wir Diane unsere Rettungssani dabei. Stets aufmerksam.

Wow, das ist mal ne ganz andere Temperatur! Meine kaelteste Erfahrung bislang.
wow this is indeed a new experience with the so far coolest experiene for me.

Anschliessend erstmal warme Getraenke und paar Happen zu sich nehmen um wieder aufzutanken.

Natuerlich bekommen auch die Enten was ab :) And of course the ducks are not forgotten.

Queenstown
FergBaker und FergBurger (not)

Dies ist der leckere FergBaker, eine Baeckerei die europaeische Backwaren anbietet, mit Brezel, Sauerteig und Kuchen wie wir sie kennen.

This is the delicious FergBakery, a place with European producs such as pretzel, soudough bread and cake as we know it in Germany.

Ich wollte ja gerne einen FergBurger (Hamburger) den Abend, aber mit unuebertrieben 800 Personen in der Schlange stehen ist nicht drin. Ich finde was anderes zum essen.
I was keen to get a FergBurger that evening but standing in a queue with 800 hungry people just to get a burger is nothing for me. No thanks. I find something different. 

Hab dann abends ne Nachricht von der Gruppe bekommen das welche zum nahegelegenen Pub "Pig & Whistle" = Schwein und Pfeife gegangen sind. Dort gabs auch gute Kleinigkeiten von der Bar und mit einem Bier ist das doch auch lecker...

Same evening I received a message from the group that some went to the nearby pub Pig & Whistle for some bar food. I joined them and it was quite nice stuff to eat instead. Combined cheers with beers, all yummy and happy.

Di und ich hatten uns kurzfristig entschlossen dieses indoor-FallschirmErlebnis zu machen.

Milford Sound Flight

Mit dieser kleinen Maschine ging es ueber die wunderschoenen Fjorde des Milford Sound. With this little plane we had aerial views over the beautiful fiords of Milford Sound.

Arrowtown

Nach dem Gaenseschwimmen sind wir anschliessend zum gemeinsamen Fruehstueck nach Arrowtown. Dies ist eine sehr kleine gemuetliche Ortschaft kurz vor Queenstown - etwa 20-30 min zum kleinen versteckten Kurnstdoerfchen

After the "geese swim" we decided to go for a breakfast together and decided for Arrowtown which is a small curious village about 20-30 minutes from Queenstown, a little arty crafty place

Hier an der Waterfront waren wir zwei bis drei mal schwimmen, da es so sehr nahegelegen ist und schoen

Einigen war es echt sehr kalt geworden und dies kann zu Kaelteschock fuehren, gut das wir die Rettunsassistentin dabei hatten! Andere waren happy in nur Badeanzug schwimmen und ok anschliessend.

Some were really extremely cold after the swim and its dangerous, glad we had a paramedic with us. Others however were happy to swim in just togs.

Auch ich hatte dann auf den Neoprenanzug verzichtet. Brauch ich nicht. Geht so! Alles Kopfsache.
I decided to ditch the wetsuit and didnt need it. I was fine without. Its all mind over matter.

Queenstown Schnee!

Natuerlich wir wieder unterwegs zum Gluehwein trinken! Das war ja immer das Highlight der Tour und des Abends: Gemeinsam schoene warme Gluehweine, dann ab ins Bett und gut schlafen.

This of course was the thing of the trip... The highlight of the evening to drink a mulled wine, get warmed up inside out and ensure a good sleep.

Queenstown City.. vergeblich und verzweifelt nach einem Restaurant suchen, das 8 Personen aufnimmt.. Ziemlich schwierig da sehr viel Personalmangel herrscht, dank Covid hat es Queenstown doch schon sehr getroffen.

In the Queenstown City we tried desperately to find a restaurant that can take 8 persons as most places struggled with personnel and had shortage of manning. The outcome of covid and they were hit hard as a touristy area.

Diese schwarzen Schwaene habe ich sehr bewundert. I adored these black swans. Beautiful

Ich wollte nur mal sagen, das ich das NICHT alles alleine gegessen habe! 

Meins war das erste Bild mit dem Wild-Steak und Bratensosse. 

Das daneben, Bild 2 ist ein indisches Curry (iiiih)
Bild 3 ist gegrilltes Bauchspeck und 4. ein Dessert Eis Sorbet

Just wanting to say that I did NOT eat this all by myself!
My meal was the first picture with venison and gravy.
The one next to it on picture 2 is an Indian Curry (yuck)
The picture 3 is a grilled pork bally and 4. is a sorbet dessert
